Turkish Republic reiterates demand for 2-state solution for island
Tatar made the remarks during a farewell visit from Colin Stewart, the outgoing UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Cyprus and head of the UN Peacekeeping Force, whose term ends Saturday.
Expressing appreciation for Stewart’s service, Tatar noted that their meetings had always been clear and constructive. He criticized the UN Security Council's ongoing preference for a federal model, arguing that decades of negotiations have yielded no results and the Greek Cypriot side remains uncooperative.
“The TRNC is a fully sovereign state. The Security Council’s resolution is outdated and no longer relevant. The region, its status, the Eastern Mediterranean, and Türkiye have all changed significantly,” Tatar stated.
Stewart, who began his role in 2021, thanked Tatar for their constructive dialogue, saying he believed the TRNC leader sincerely cared about Turkish Cypriot interests and had worked toward a positive approach.
